2022–2023 has been an interesting year for music. We’ve seen genres such as Rage, Pluggnb, NY&NJ drill, Breakcore, Hyper Pop, and Punk Rap rise to the top of the charts along with newer refreshing sounds. One sound that I can’t exactly pinpoint is one that I’ve been familiarized with from Dom Corleo and his producer 16teen, who has been notorious for sampling hit songs such as Ginseng Strip by Yung Lean, adding the infamous Mimo 808.

With this sound being everywhere on my FYP on TikTok, I was introduced to an artist by the name of Quelly Woo, in collaboration with JSH, composed a catchy tune while sampling Kingdom Hearts 2 iconic opening Sanctuary. Quelly Woo is able to keep things interesting with a myriad of iconic and recognizable samples. For example, On the intro track of his 2nd album TOP PROSPECTTimes Like This,” Quelly delivers a hungry performance over a tweaked version of Meek Mill’s “Dreams and Nightmares (Intro),” on “Last Spliff” he confidently attacks the instrumental to Kendrick Lamar’s LOVE. And “Try ya Luck” over XXXTentacion’s “I don’t wanna do this anymore”.

In the end, new listeners may still find it difficult to accept Quelly Woo and Pop Smoke’s uncanny similarities, but with Mr.TP, the Canarsie musician moves one step closer to establishing a niche for himself.
